WALKING BACKWARDS Strung up on the mainframe like crows hung out to dry It's organized chaos from crack to crack When you’re walking backwards you can remember the dead When you’re walking backwards But you can’t escape your head On every pavement, on every one way street Love lies bleeding Examine the state of your soul Examine the state of your underwear When you’re walking backwards you can’t remember your own name When you’re walking backwards You can’t escape your head Every illusion is falling away No hidden meanings Ai escaped from the prison Running from trust running from trust running from trust There is no fixed gender identity in the nations of Gethen a native of Terra the story of Genly Ai When you’re walking backwards you can remember the dead When you’re walking backwards you can’t remember your name When you’re walking backwards nothing looks quite the same And no-one can tell you goodbye You can’t escape your head © Helen Woodbridge

The Fall 02:13
THE FALL We saw you We saw your fall We saw you fallng down We saw it all You seemed so serene the faintest scream And I thought if I could fly I would not fly like that I would fly the way a leaf flies sashaying the breeze or soar like a kite tethered by a line still anchored and you are anchored unable to ignore the uprush of concrete its' appalling appeal answering earth's umbilical call. © Helen Woodbridge

RIDE THE WAVES I took the road down to the south-west Down to where firm ground turns into Lyonesse Down where the land meets the sea To feel it healing me I wrote my name in the sand And I watched as the waves washed through every word of me And I turned my back to the land To face the open sea Oh some fine day I will ride the waves I will ride the wild waves I will ride the waves I will ride the waves I will ride the wild waves I stood there with my arms stretched out open wide Waiting for the wind to lift me up like a kite And I dreamed myself rising over the earth So alive and so li---gh---t Some fine day when the weight of the world presses down too heavily Oh oh oh I will take the road that leads down to the sea And I will listen to the music of the waves that sing a harmony And set my spirit free Oh on that fine day I will ride the wave I will ride the wild waves I will ride the wave I will ride the wave I will ride the wild waves Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh wo oh oh oh oh oh © Helen Woodbridge October 2014

Ritual Masks 02:56
RITUAL MASKS The faces leer from far away to near and peer and fade again the mouths distort and the death masks grin and like a devil sick of sin their weary thoughts sink further from the ritual masks of everyday The voices jabber yatter yammer I try to talk but now my tongue can only stammer language falls apart on my lips and turns to jabbering hoots and howls all understanding slips and takes the meaning from the sounds and in the pandemonium I stumble on through air that thickens as I breathe it in the fish in this aquarium don't their faces look familiar? don't you remember meeting them? Ahh ahhh ahh ahh I stumble from the room like Eve from the Garden stained with confusion and crash into illusion and the light behind their faces changes places with their stares so tainted by mortality but so far from reality © Helen Woodbridge 2013

TAKE TO THE HILLS The kestrel’s over the motorway I suppose what I’m doing is running away The road is snaking on over the border saying Why don’t you take to the hills? With my eyes on the sky and my hand on the wheel Of this exoskeleton made out of carbon and rubber and steel Every sensation from my head to my heel Is telling me take to the hills Glancing up to the open sky Watching the tatters of clouds race by Feeling the beat of the words in my mind Why don’t you take to the hills? Why don’t you take to the hills? The trickster Loki’s the light on the screen Has me searching for meaning among the mundane Weighing the balance of pleasure to pain makes Me want to take to the hills. The kestrel’s over the motorway Holding together the cold blue heaven A juggernaut’s rumbling into my mirror Why don’t we take to the hills? © Helen Woodbridge 2014/16

Dust 03:57
DUST If wishes were horses, oo ooo ooo If wishes were horses If wishes were horses I would have a herd of brumbies The like of which has not been seen Since the Mongol hordes Darkened the steps of Central Asia If wishes were horses I would be a Camarguese Bareback on a stallion plunging through the waves Where pretty pink flamingoes Shimmer among the shining salt pans But if wishes were horses, oo ooo ooo If wishes were horses If wishes were horses you would have loved me And you would tell me so every day And I would believe you Dust, dust gathers no matter what What exactly is this stuff - All this life detritus This is all that's left to us of us Ah but if wishes were horses ooo ooo ah If wishes were horses ooo ooo ah If wishes were horses ooo ooo ah If wishes were horses ooo ooo ah (c )Helen Woodbridge 2017

Fit 03:25
FIT When the mirror shows the emperors missing clothes And everybody knows it but the emperor Then whatever the cause and maybe just because Where there’s profit or there’s loss it always costs Then the fool is on the hill and the madcap’s laughing still Though this hole’s too deep to fill and nothing fits, fits Then launch me into space fly me to a place Where this present face fits, fits, fits I can never be the person you want me to be I can only be me So this is where we are floating on this lonely star Blundering through the dark anyhow so now Launch me into space fly me to the place Where this present face fits, fits Show me how to make something like the shape That will indicate a perfect fit, fit, fit Ah…… © Helen Woodbridge 2013

Moony 03:33
MOONY Where have you been Moony? I’ve been searching everywhere Where have you been Moony? Shine your silver balm your quiet calm Shine on me and don’t be a stranger Never be a stranger Promise you’ll stay Moony Do not forsake me Promise you’ll stay Moony Because the dark’s been trying to take me Don’t be a stranger Never be a stranger Because you know the melancholy fit may fall Sudden from heaven like a weeping child Hiding in the garden forgotten and alone Where have you been Moony? I’ve been longing for your light Where have you been Moony? To illuminate my night Don’t be a stranger Never be a stranger Don’t mind the sun, Moony, everyone loves you Loves your silver beams, your subtle charms Loves to sleep in your arms Moony your light eases even the loneliest night Don’t let the clouds don’t let them obscure you And when all is said and done All you do’s reflect the sun You’re just a rock Moony still I will adore you So shine Moony shine Shine Moony shine Shine Moony shine ©Helen Woodbridge 2015

DON’T STOP Don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop Don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop, don’t stop Oh the trees they grow so high and the leaves they grow so green But the days are past and gone my dear when you made love to me Sure the leaves will come again like the mayflowers in the spring But our everlasting love was just a feeble stillborn thing She asked him for a story that none had ever told He called for her to make for him a coat of beaten gold She promised she would meet him where the sunset touched the earth He said he’d pledge his love for her the day before her birth But don’t stop asking questions Don’t stop searching for the way Don’t stop life is a festival Don’t stop live it every day Don’t stop riding a bicycle Don’t stop diving in the sea Don’t stop looking for answers Don’t stop aiming to be free Don’t stop smiling at strangers Don’t stop trying to be kind Don’t stop chasing rainbows Don’t stop opening your mind Don’t stop ah no don’t stop Don’t stop don’t stop don’t stop don’t stop Don’t stop hoping for miracles Don’t stop howling at the moon Don’t stop pushing the boat out Don’t don’t don’t don’t stop….. © Helen Woodbridge 2014

Seven is the number number one cried Nine hundred and eighty three's another one his brother replied Your secret smile told me you were happy Your secret smile told me who I was But everyone said we were bad for each other And everyone said no more secret smiles If we don't talk in numbers then we don't talk at all And the numero brothers are silent now The numero brothers are silent now The mystery of numbers makes us whole two are one We played our games together took communion from numerical puns Your secret smile told me every detail Your secret smile could calculate my days But everyone said we were bad for each other And everyone said no more secret smiles If we don't talk in numbers then we don't talk at all And the numero brothers are silent now. The numero brothers are silent now In monotone our memories could detail our days It could be anguish, could be humiliation, the tone stayed the same Your secret smile carried no emotion Your secret smile held no praise or blame But everyone said we were bad for each other And everyone said no more secret smiles If we don't talk in numbers then we don't talk at all And the numero brothers are silent now The numero brothers are silent now.
